Force and Torque Model for Bearingless PM Motors

Zusammenfassung: In this paper a new approach to a force and torque calculation method for bearingless PM motors is presented. Since the method is based on the Fourier coefficients of the electromagnetic field variables, it gives deep insight into force and torque generation. Moreover, if this method is applied to bearingless PM motors a very simple condition can be formulated to check whether a certain motor design can be used for bearingless operation. This criterion is then applied to different motor designs to determine whether these designs make bearingless operation possible or even allow fault tolerant operation in the case of coil failure.
